What Kind of Guitar should You Start with?

The right guitar for you to start with is the one YOU want to play.

I know, I know, I know... you hear online or from your friend who's played for 50 years that you HAVE to start on the acoustic before you can even think about playing the electric guitar, and if you do, then you're NEVER going to learn properly, or you're going to disservice yourself in the future.

This couldn't be further from the truth! The right guitar to start with is the guitar that inspires you to play! If you want to play metal or rock, don't start on an acoustic! Start on the guitar that you'd have to play to play the stuff you want.

The argument about how if you start on acoustic, then you'll get more developed callouses faster is partially true, but I think if you don't want to play an acoustic, it'll make you not want to practice, whereas if you had an electric and you wanted an electric, you'd be happier playing your instrument, which will make you develop callouses faster, and get you better faster.

"It's too expensive to start with an electric!" A lesson once a week for a year will cost about $1,560, if you don't want to shell out a few hundred for the initial investment to get yourself something you'll get excited about playing, you should consider a different hobby. If you wanted to learn how to ski, you wouldn't cheap out on lessons OR on skis. It's also super important to remember that you will not master your instrument right away, but just like anything, with time and practice, you can absolutely become a truly skilled player.

I'm not saying you need to go out and spend 2k on a guitar you might not love, but I am saying that before you purchase something, ask yourself what you plan to play on it, are you going to be comfortable sitting with this for a few hours a day or week, and does it feel like the right guitar for you? Is this a guitar you love?
